Match flow and goalscorers

The final goal was an extraordinary strike from around 35 meters. After a counterattack and a pass from Tatjana Weiss, she chipped the onrushing goalkeeper van Niehoff to make it 6:0 (85'). The long lob provided the highlight of an already one-sided game.

For the Austria women, it was a clear statement in the battle for the top group of the Austrian Women's Bundesliga. The coach and players had described the derby beforehand as a benchmark and wanted to prove their strength against a direct city rival. They succeeded, delivering the heaviest defeat Rapid has suffered in women's football to date.

Reactions at Austria and Rapid

Rapid tried over long stretches to keep the game open with fight and discipline, but found only rare answers against the hosts' compact defense and quick transition play. Above all, the wide areas of the Austria side repeatedly put the Rapid defensive players under pressure and directly created several goals.

After the final whistle, the Austria fans' section celebrated the team for several minutes. Players and coach stood in front of the block and thanked them for their backing. The performance was also praised by federation representatives, who want to further professionalize women's football in Austria.

Significance for Austrian women's football

From Rapid's perspective, the focus after the clear defeat is on quickly processing the result. As early as next weekend, the next league match is on the fixture list, in which the team wants to show a response. The coach and officials stressed that the loss is no grounds — despite all the disappointment — to question the path the club has taken in women's football.

The record crowd underscores the growing interest in women's football in Austria. The Bundesliga officials had beforehand banked on a rise in attendance figures, which was clearly exceeded by the Vienna Derby. Should the trend continue, the match could be regarded as a turning point for the marketing of Austrian women's football.
