VKI Stroller Test: Four Models "Good," Several Fail on Pollutants and Ergonomics

The VKI cites ongoing pollutant findings in various models as the biggest problem. VKI expert Christian Undeutsch explained: "Auch wenn von den PFAS-haltigen Materialien im Alltag keine unmittelbare Gesundheitsgefahr für Kinder ausgeht, sind solche Funde aus Umwelt- und Verbraucherschutzsicht kritisch zu sehen." According to the available test results, DEHP-containing materials were also detected in several products.

In addition to the chemical complaints, the testers criticized ergonomic shortcomings. These included bassinets that were too short or too narrow, which do not offer sufficient space for all infants and toddlers. The VKI therefore recommends that parents look for a bassinet measuring at least 78 centimeters in length and 35 centimeters in width to ensure a healthy lying position.

Price Says Little About Quality

It was also notable that a high price did not automatically equate to good quality. "Der Test zeigt außerdem, dass ein hoher Preis keine Garantie für hohe Qualität ist. Umgekehrt fanden sich unter den Schlusslichtern auch Produkte im oberen Preissegment," Undeutsch commented further. As a result, parents face a largely opaque quality landscape when choosing a stroller.

In his conclusion, Undeutsch pointed to the expectations of families: "Eltern erwarten von einem Kinderwagen vor allem Sicherheit, Komfort und eine schadstofffreie Umgebung für ihr Kind. Unser Test zeigt jedoch, dass diese Anforderungen nicht bei allen Produkten erfüllt werden." The gap between marketing promises and the actual reality of testing is one of the central problems.

VKI Recommendations

The VKI advises consumers to consult independent test reports specifically before making a purchase. In addition to the current VKI test, results from Germany's Stiftung Warentest can also serve as a guide, as both institutions apply similar testing criteria.

Overall, the test certifies that the industry continues to face an unsatisfactory situation in two central criteria — freedom from pollutants and ergonomics. The results suggest that manufacturers in particular need to improve their twin strollers and higher-priced models in order to meet the VKI's requirements.

The VKI announced that it will continue to monitor developments and reassess in future tests whether manufacturers are responding to the points of criticism.
