Volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau strands 170,000 travelers at eight Indonesian airports

Four of the closed airports are commercial facilities operated by InJourney Airports, the state-owned airport manager. According to figures cited across multiple reports, the closures include Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the country's busiest hub, alongside Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in the capital, Husein Sastranegara in West Java, and Radin Inten in Lampung at the southern tip of Sumatra.

Soekarno-Hatta, which handles the bulk of Indonesia's international and domestic traffic, has been the focal point of the disruption. Aviation authorities grounded flights as satellite imagery and ground sensors confirmed ash drifting at altitudes used by commercial aircraft, where fine particles can damage jet engines and severely reduce visibility.

The other four airports affected were not named in the verified reporting, but officials said they were spread across the same air corridor, extending the no-fly zone along the volcano's downwind path. Carriers operating in the region, including the flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and budget airlines Lion Air and Citilink, suspended services and began rebooking passengers.

Carriers and regulators respond

Indonesia's aviation regulator, in coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), has been issuing updated wind-forecast bulletins to determine when each airport can safely resume operations. Airline ground staff at Soekarno-Hatta set up additional service desks and distributed water and food to waiting passengers.

For stranded travelers, the impact has been immediate and logistical. Families separated by cancelled connecting flights, business travelers missing meetings, and tourists unable to reach Bali or other destinations reported long queues at terminal counters. Several airlines said they would waive rebooking fees for affected passengers.

The aviation shutdown comes against a wider backdrop of volcanic risk in the archipelago. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more active volcanoes than any other country. Mount Anak Krakatau itself has produced repeated eruptive episodes in recent years; a flank collapse and tsunami in December 2018 killed more than 400 people and reshaped the volcano's profile.

Broader volcanic and economic context

Economists tracking the disruption said prolonged closures could ripple beyond aviation. Indonesia's tourism sector, heavily reliant on air access to Bali and other island destinations, is entering a high-travel period, and perishable goods transported by air from Sumatra and West Java face spoilage risks if flights remain grounded for several days.

As of Tuesday, authorities had not given a definitive timeline for reopening. Officials stressed that the decision would be tied to ash dispersion forecasts and aircraft manufacturer guidance on safe operating thresholds, rather than fixed calendar targets. Passengers were advised to check airline notifications before traveling to airports.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said it was monitoring for potential ashfall in coastal communities nearest the volcano and had distributed masks in two districts. There were no immediate reports of injuries or large-scale evacuations from the eruption itself, with the aviation sector absorbing the bulk of the impact so far.
