Volkswagen chief executive Oliver Blume has warned that the situation at Europe's largest automaker is "more than critical," as the company presses ahead with wide-ranging cost-saving measures and the broader German car industry sheds thousands of jobs.

Speaking in an interview about the group's condition, Blume acknowledged mounting pressure on Volkswagen's results and acknowledged that difficult decisions lay ahead. His remarks come as VW pushes through a major restructuring programme aimed at lowering costs across its German operations.

The cost-cutting push is unfolding against a backdrop of weakening demand, rising competition from Asian electric-vehicle manufacturers and the costly transition to software-defined cars. The combination has weighed on margins at Volkswagen and its peers, with several German plants already facing capacity reductions.
