Volkswagen Supervisory Board Approves Group's Future Plan

IG Metall, as the largest employee representation in the workforce, had demanded extensive concessions from the company in advance. According to reports, these included investment commitments for individual sites as well as guarantees for employment and utilization of the plants over several years.

The Role of IG Metall

The agreement comes at a time when Volkswagen is confronted with weaker demand for new cars and more intense competition from Chinese manufacturers. Added to this are burdens from tariffs on imported vehicles in the United States, which place additional pressure on the Group's export-oriented business.

In the USA, Volkswagen produces around 200,000 vehicles per year according to its own figures. This is offset by approximately 240,000 imports per year from Europe, which are subject to a tariff of 15 percent. In addition, there are around 287,000 vehicles delivered from Mexico to the USA, which are subject to a tariff of 27.5 percent.

Burdens from Tariffs and Competition

With the future plan now approved, the company's aim is to secure competitiveness in the medium term. The Board of Management had repeatedly emphasized that without an adjustment of the cost structure and the product range, jobs in Germany would be at risk in the long term.

Christiane Benner, who led the negotiations for the employee side as chairwoman of the General and Group Works Council, had most recently signaled understanding for the economic situation, while at the same time making clear that workforce reductions or site closures would not be accepted without further ado.

Outlook and Next Steps

Details on the individual measures are to be communicated in the coming weeks. According to this, investments in the development of new drive technologies are planned, as well as adjustments in manufacturing. The utilization of the plants is also to be redistributed according to the plan in order to reduce overcapacities.

Volkswagen announced that it would continue the dialogue with the social partners. This includes talks on the concrete implementation of the steps now decided at the individual sites. A final assessment of the plan's economic impact is not expected before the presentation of the next quarterly figures.

Among observers, the Supervisory Board's approval is considered a formal breakthrough that clears the way for the Board of Management to implement the announced changes. Whether the agreements reached will be sufficient to put Volkswagen on a profitable footing in the coming years will be shown by the sales figures and earnings development of the next quarters.
