The Volkswagen Group has terminated virtually all in-house collective agreements in Germany. As IG Metall announced on Tuesday, the move affects, among other things, contractual allowances, regulations on the takeover of apprentices, and protection clauses for older and health-impaired employees. The union sharply criticized the approach and spoke of a "übles Foul" toward the workforce.
Background of the conflict
By terminating the agreements, VW is shifting the existing arrangements into a phase without collective bargaining obligations. Typically, terminated collective agreements continue to apply until replaced by a new agreement, while the employer could make unilateral changes. IG Metall sees this as an attempt to weaken essential protection standards for the core workforce.
