The German men's national volleyball team has lost 1:3 (20:25, 25:20, 21:25, 31:33) to world champion Italy in the Nations League in Ottawa, suffering its first defeat of the tournament.
After the opening win against host Canada, the squad led by national team head coach Massimo Botti immediately faced the toughest task of the first tournament week. Italy, which entered the match as the reigning world champion, proved to be the expectedly high hurdle over long stretches. The first set went to the Italians 20:25, but the Germans struck back in the second set, leveling the match with a 25:20 win. After that, however, Italy regained control and took the third set 25:21.
In the fourth set, both teams engaged in an open duel that was only decided in extra points. The German team squandered five set points before Italy won the set 33:31 to seal the match victory. The match lasted just under two and a half hours in total. With 17 points, Tobias Brand was Germany's top scorer in the match.
