The Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) in Austria is more popular than ever since its legal establishment in 2012: in 2025, according to Social Minister Korinna Schumann (SPÖ), around 1,900 young women and men completed such a voluntary service.
Growth Since the Legal Establishment
The number of participants in the Voluntary Social Year in Austria has been rising continuously for years. As the Social Minister explained in response to a parliamentary question from the FPÖ, "Die Zahl der jungen Frauen und Männer, die ein Freiwilliges Sozialjahr (FSJ) machen, nimmt weiter zu." In 2025, there were accordingly around 1,900 participants, "2024 waren es noch 1700".
