Voluntary Social Year in Austria Sees Significant Increase to Around 1,900 Participants

Background and Age of Participants

"Die bei weitem meisten Teilnehmer kommen aus Niederösterreich (730), gefolgt von Wien (352) und Oberösterreich (243)". The average age of participants was, according to the ministry, "im Schnitt waren sie 19 Jahre alt".

In terms of content, the volunteers are mainly active where provision depends on volunteer and professional helpers. "Am häufigsten haben sich die Freiwilligen zuletzt im Rettungswesen engagiert, gefolgt von der Sozial- und Behindertenhilfe und der Betreuung von Kindern und älteren Menschen."

Areas of Deployment and Impact

The impact of the FSJ extends beyond the service itself: 75 percent of all participants indicated in an evaluation that they also want to work in the social sector in the future. At the Red Cross, for example, after the FSJ, "knapp die Hälfte der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer weiter für die Organisation tätig".

Formally, the Voluntary Social Year, which can last between six and twelve months, is a training relationship. "Pro Monat gibt es ein Taschengeld von 550 Euro", and additionally "bis 24 kann zusätzlich Familienbeihilfe bezogen werden". This makes the service financially manageable for young people as well.

Framework Conditions and Financial Resources

Participation is possible from the age of 17, or earlier with special suitability. "Männer können sich ein mindestens zehnmonatiges FSJ auch auf den Zivildienst anrechnen lassen". How often this actually happens is not recorded by the ministry: "Zahlen, wie oft das tatsächlich passiert, liegen im Ministerium allerdings nicht vor".

The financial framework conditions are regulated in the Voluntary Service Act. "Insgesamt stehen laut Freiwilligengesetz maximal 4,5 Mio. Euro pro Jahr für das FSJ zur Verfügung." The rising number of participants shows that the programme has been able to continue expanding within this framework.
