German Red Cross (DRK) President Hermann Gröhe has called for a substantial increase in the monthly allowance for participants in the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ), proposing a raise from roughly 400 euros to the Bafög maximum rate of 990 euros.

In an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND), the former CDU Federal Health Minister stated that the current allowance means "truly not all young people can afford such a service to our community."

Gröhe argued that raising the allowance to the Bafög maximum rate would significantly broaden access to the FSJ. "This would increase the opportunities for young people to do voluntary service, even if they come from families that have to turn over every cent," he said.
