European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has publicly rallied behind Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez after the Ceuta border crisis triggered unusually sharp criticism from other EU member states, according to analysis from the European Council on Foreign Relations.
The exchange has underscored how a migration emergency at a single border crossing can rattle relations across the European Union. According to Carla Hobbs, head of the Madrid office at the European Council on Foreign Relations, EU capitals reacted to the Ceuta situation with a level of public criticism that is rarely seen among member states. "What we didn't expect was this kind of response, and how severe it was, from other EU leaders. It's genuinely quite rare for member states to turn on one another so publicly like this and over a crisis that never really risked reaching their borders," Hobbs said, speaking about the unusually pointed tone of the debate.
