The state of Vorarlberg plans to significantly expand Sunday and holiday opening hours for small grocery stores in 65 municipalities or districts with at most one full-range retailer, as State Governor Markus Wallner and Economic Councilor Marco Tittler (both ÖVP) announced on Sunday.

Planned Expansion

Specifically, the draft provides that grocery stores with a sales area of up to 400 square meters in selected rural municipalities or districts may open on Sundays and holidays from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. According to the state, the prerequisite is that the stores predominantly carry food and employ no staff beyond the owners themselves. The state government intends to adopt the corresponding ordinance on Tuesday.

The intended relaxation is meant to strengthen "the local food supply where it is particularly needed," according to the state's press release. With this, Vorarlberg is responding to the supply situation in sparsely populated regions, where a growing number of stores is lacking.
