NEOS launches new push for uniform Sunday opening in Austria

Criticism is coming from the SPÖ. Federal Managing Director Klaus Seltenheim argues against a general Sunday opening: "Der arbeitsfreie Sonntag stellt sicher, dass es einen Tag in der Woche gibt, an dem alle Familienmitglieder Zeit füreinander haben". The SPÖ sees Sunday as an important resting point for employees and families.

There are also cautious signals from the ranks of the ÖVP. Although the economic importance of retail on Sundays is fundamentally acknowledged, representatives of the People's Party insist on existing labor law protections. They are rejecting a general liberalization for the time being.

Arguments from the business community

The Vienna Chamber of Commerce and retail representatives point to the labor shortage and competition from online commerce. They argue that more flexible opening hours are necessary to safeguard the attractiveness of brick-and-mortar retail. At the same time, they emphasize the voluntary nature of Sunday employment.

The NEOS also point in their initiative to European neighboring countries, where more liberal rules on Sunday openings exist. They see this as a locational disadvantage for Austria and are calling for a modernization of existing laws.

In the coming weeks, the first parliamentary initiatives could be announced. Whether the SPÖ and the ÖVP will join a compromise remains open. Both parties have recently emphasized that they want to preserve Sunday as a family day.

Outlook on parliamentary steps

Vienna plays a particular role in the debate because that is where tourist hotspots, shopping streets, and international competitive pressure come together most strongly. Many Viennese shops want more leeway to open on Sundays.

The NEOS first want to advance the discussion at the federal level and then put forward concrete legislative proposals. Until then, it remains to be seen how the position of the federal government and the social partners develops.

Overall, the NEOS initiative shows that the question of Sunday openings in Austria remains politically contested. While business representatives are pushing for more flexibility, social democrats and social partners are warning against an erosion of the work-free Sunday.
