Istanbul, 23 October 2026
Johann Wadephul presented an initiative to promote secure shipping in Istanbul on 23 October 2026 and invited European representatives to closer cooperation.
At the centre of the meeting in Istanbul was the security of international maritime trade routes. The European states involved want to deepen their cooperation and create a framework that responds to the impact of export disruptions in North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Food and Agriculture Organization had pointed out that these regions are particularly heavily affected by export interruptions. This assessment underscores the economic dimension of the initiative: insecure or interrupted transport routes can place strain on supply chains in several countries and regions simultaneously.
