Brasília, 03 July 2026
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Friday called at the conclusion of his four-day South America trip in Brasília for a swift expansion of the German raw materials fund for rare earths and critical minerals, and described the EU-Mercosur trade agreement as a "Gamechanger".
Background: The EU-Mercosur Agreement
On the final day of his trip through Paraguay, Argentina, and Chile, Wadephul met in the Brazilian capital with his counterpart Mauro Vieira. The talks centered on the implementation of the free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, which – alongside Brazil – also includes Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The agreement provisionally entered into force in early May and aims to strengthen the exchange of goods and services through the gradual reduction of trade barriers and tariffs.
