German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) visited the Goethe-Institut in São Paulo on Thursday to promote the immigration of qualified skilled workers from South America and, in discussions with language students, addressed concerns about racism and xenophobia in Germany.
Wadephul spoke at the Goethe-Institut São Paulo with young language students who have plans to go to Germany. The CDU politician had traveled to Brazil to promote the recruitment of skilled workers from South America. According to dpa-AFX, the background is Germany's shortage of skilled workers. During the visit, he spoke positively about the integration of migrants in his country.
The minister also addressed students' concerns stemming from reports of racism and xenophobia in Germany. He acknowledged existing problems but conceded that the discussion is often too sweeping. "Es wird ein bisschen zu viel über die Probleme als über das Gelingen gesprochen. Es gelingt nämlich sehr viel," Wadephul said, according to the report.
