Johann Wadephul warned in a speech at the Stresemann Society in Mainz of the foreign policy consequences of AfD participation in government and accused the party of having a proximity to Russia as well as a turn away from Europe.

The CDU politician Johann Wadephul spoke in the evening at the Stresemann Society in Mainz and warned of the foreign policy consequences should the AfD assume governmental responsibility. The warning came at a time when the AfD is leading in polls for Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ahead of the state elections scheduled for September.

In his speech, Wadephul sharply attacked the AfD and accused it of relying on exclusion, isolation, and the division of society. In his assessment, the party shares neither the commitment to Europe, to the Western alliance, and to the transatlantic relationship, nor the rejection of nationalist dreams of dominance. He said verbatim: "Das Bekenntnis zu Europa, zur Westbindung, dem transatlantischen Verhältnis sowie zu einer Absage an nationalistische Dominanzträume teile diese Partei nicht."
