The American pilot Wally Funk, who at the age of 82 had flown to space as the oldest woman to that point, died overnight into Thursday at the age of 87 in Grapevine in the U.S. state of Texas.

According to a city spokesperson, Wally Funk died in Grapevine of natural causes, surrounded by people who loved her. The city in the U.S. state of Texas spoke of a great loss and commemorated the pilot with a statement honoring her "groundbreaking achievements." City councilor Duff O'Dell stated: „Wally Funks unerschütterliche Entschlossenheit beweist, dass Träume kein Verfallsdatum haben".

The U.S. space company Blue Origin, which took Funk to space in 2021 aboard the "New Shepard" spacecraft, also responded to her death.
