Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) has appealed to the federal states to reduce building regulations for care homes to the minimum, while at the same time defending planned cuts to subsidies for care home residents.

Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) has spoken out in favor of significantly reducing the legal requirements for care homes. The legal requirements for care homes should be "reduced to the minimum," Warken told the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe. The aim is to lower the costs of care places and thereby relieve the financial situation of the long-term care insurance system.

As examples of excessive regulations, Warken cited requirements regarding room sizes and the size of communal areas. "Da wurde aus gutem Willen übertrieben, etwa was die Platzvorgaben für Zimmer angeht oder die Größe von Gemeinschaftsräumen," the minister criticized. Such excessive requirements make care places in facilities more expensive: "Auch das macht Pflegeplätze in Einrichtungen teuer." Under the federal system, responsibility for building regulations lies with the federal states.
