Cologne, July 4, 2026
The district governments of Cologne and Münster have imposed bans on water abstraction from several rivers due to the ongoing drought in North Rhine-Westphalia, which will come into force on July 4 and July 6 respectively.
The Münster district government prohibited the abstraction of water from the Ems starting July 4. The Cologne district government follows with a corresponding general order, which takes effect on July 6. The two district governments are thus extending measures that are already in force in several districts.
In mid-June, the city of Cologne had already completely banned water abstraction from its flowing waters. According to the district governments, similar bans had previously been in effect in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis, the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, the Städteregion Aachen, the Kreis Herford, and the Kreis Borken.
The Cologne regulation affects the rivers Sieg, Agger, Rur, Erft, and Wupper. The authority justified the step with the protection of fish, insects, and other aquatic communities. The water levels were currently at a level normally reached later in the year, the Cologne district government explained.
