Weidel has called on Merz to draw personal and substantive consequences for the CDU following its latest state election defeats.

Historic Lows for the CDU

Following the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt, Weidel is sharpening her criticism of the CDU under Merz's leadership. She accused the Union of failure across the board and demanded a fundamental change of course. According to preliminary results, the CDU reached only 4.9 percent in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and 17.2 percent in Saxony-Anhalt – both historic lows for the party in state elections.

With the result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the CDU sets a new negative record. The CDU's previous worst results in state elections date from Bremen 1951 (9.0 percent) and Hamburg 2020 (11.2 percent). The result in Saxony-Anhalt also fits into a series of weak performances by the party in recent years, such as in Brandenburg 2024 (12.1 percent) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 2021 (13.3 percent).
