In several European countries, an increased number of infections have been registered in recent weeks. Affected areas include Italy, France, and also parts of Germany, where the RKI continues to monitor the situation. Travel to affected regions can increase individual risk, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours when the transmitting mosquitoes are active.

According to the RKI, an infection proceeds without recognizable symptoms in around 80 percent of those affected. However, about one in five ill persons develops fever, headaches, and limb pain. In rare cases, meningitis or encephalitis can occur, which can take a life-threatening course.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been observing the spread of the West Nile virus for years with growing attention. Climatic changes that favor the reproduction of the transmitting mosquitoes are being discussed as one driver of the rising case numbers.

European and International Observation

In addition to the elimination of breeding sites, the authorities recommend wearing long clothing at dusk and using insect repellents. Mosquito nets over windows and beds can also reduce exposure. Anyone who develops symptoms after staying in risk areas should seek medical advice.

In Germany, human cases have so far only been recorded sporadically, yet the RKI classifies the risk of local transmission in suitable regions as not excluded. There is no specific therapy against the West Nile virus; treatment is limited to the alleviation of symptoms. Prevention therefore remains the most important tool.

Course of the 2026 Season

The West Nile fever season in Europe usually extends from June to October, with a peak during the hot summer months. Authorities expect that case numbers may continue to rise if temperatures remain high in the coming weeks.

International bodies emphasize that early reporting of suspected cases improves surveillance. General practitioners play a key role in rapidly recognizing infections and treating complications at an early stage.

The current case numbers make clear that vector-borne diseases are gaining increasing importance in Europe. In addition to the West Nile virus, dengue and chikungunya viruses are also under observation, which are spread by similar mosquito species.
