Vienna, 14 July 2026

The private rail company Westbahn has registered several new routes with the Austrian regulatory authority Schienencontrol – including connections to Lienz in East Tyrol, to Saalfelden, and to Budapest Kelenföld.

As the registrations with Schienencontrol show, the plans include a connection from Vienna Hauptbahnhof via the Koralmbahn, Klagenfurt, Villach, and Spittal-Millstättersee continuing on to Lienz in East Tyrol. Westbahn has already been serving Villach – considered a southern Austrian rail hub – since March this year via Vienna Hbf, Graz, the Koralmbahn, and Klagenfurt.

A further registration envisages running trains from Vienna West via Salzburg, the Tauernbahn, and Spittal-Millstättersee, with a possible start date of 13 December. In addition, according to the Schienencontrol homepage, a connection from Vienna West to Saalfelden is in preparation and could start from mid-December.
