Western Europe has set a new temperature record as heat waves sweep across the region, prompting renewed warnings about health risks, wildfires and deteriorating air quality.

The Copernicus climate service confirmed the new mark as a sustained heat dome settled over much of the continent. Samantha Burgess of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts said the readings underline how rapidly such records are being rewritten, with several stations across France and the Iberian Peninsula reporting values that exceeded prior highs by wide margins.

Forecasters attribute the spike to a combination of atmospheric high pressure and residual warming from El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific. The pattern has pushed daytime peaks well above seasonal averages and suppressed overnight cooling, raising concern for vulnerable populations including the elderly and those with chronic conditions.
