Wiener Linien double e-bike fleet to 600 rental bikes

Technical upgrade of the new models

"Mit 600 neuen E-Bikes erweitern wir WienMobil Rad um ein praktisches Angebot für längere Wege und steilere Streckenabschnitte", says Wiener Linien CEO Alexandra Reinagl. The e-bikes can be rented and returned as usual at the 250 WienMobil stations. Despite the built-in motor, the e-bikes are also most popular for short distances.

The first 300 e-bikes had been in operation since July 2025 as a supplement to the 3,100 classic WienMobil bikes. Since launch, they were rented approximately 118,000 times – and are thus enjoyed slightly more than the already existing WienMobil bikes. In addition to the 300 units offered on a trial basis for the past year, an equal number is now being added.

High demand since launch

"Aber letztlich macht der Mix aus verschiedenen Radtypen WienMobil Rad besonders", says Marco Weigert, nextbike Director for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The first 300 e-bikes had been in operation since July 2025 as a supplement to the 3,100 classic WienMobil bikes. Instead of the previous 300 e-bikes, 600 e-bikes are now in service.

There is also a change to the fares from the beginning of August: Wiener Linien regular customers and Klimaticket holders will then ride particularly cheaply, paying only 2.30 euros per 30 minutes under the WienMobil Mix tariff. The e-vehicles normally cost 3.30 euros per 30 minutes, with a maximum of 40 euros per day.

Cheaper fares for regular customers

The utilization of the e-bikes shows clear peak times: around 5 p.m., the most e-bikes are borrowed. In the late afternoon, one has to be especially quick, because around 5 p.m., the most e-bikes are rented. The high demand underscores the importance of the offering for everyday life in Vienna.

"Nachdem die E-Bikes im Pilotbetrieb extrem erfolgreich genutzt worden sind, freuen wir uns, das neueste E-Bike-Modell jetzt dauerhaft nach Wien zu bringen", the company stated. The 600 new WienMobil e-bikes are a further building block for flexible and climate-friendly routes in the city and a great addition to the 3,100 WienMobil bicycles, public transport city councillor Ulli Sima is pleased about the new e-bikes for Vienna.

Expansion of the cycling network

"Egal ob ganz klassisch mit U-Bahn, Bim und Bus oder WienMobil (E-)Rad oder -Auto – wir halten Wien mobil und haben für jeden Mobilitätsgeschmack etwas dabei", says Wiener Linien CEO Alexandra Reinagl. The new e-bikes are part of a comprehensive mobility concept for the city.

"Wien setzt auf Mobilität, die im Alltag funktioniert: Öffis, Radfahren, Zu-Fuß-Gehen und Sharing-Angebote greifen ineinander", says public transport city councillor Ulli Sima (SPÖ). The city is thus pursuing an integrated approach in which various modes of transport can be seamlessly combined.

Vienna is correspondingly expanding its cycling network and has created 100 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure in recent years. According to the city, around 100 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure were built in recent years. These investments in cycling infrastructure complement the expansion of the rental bike fleet.

This year, another 12.5 kilometers of cycling paths are being added to the main cycling network. For 2026, 33 further projects with a total of around 12.5 kilometers of new cycling paths in the main cycling network are planned. Vienna is consistently continuing to expand its cycling network in 2026: in the sixth consecutive year, the City of Vienna is continuing its cycling path offensive.

Integrated mobility concept for Vienna

With 33 new projects and around 12.5 kilometers of new cycling infrastructure, the main cycling network will be consistently expanded in 2026 as well. The expansion of the e-bike fleet and the expansion of cycling infrastructure go hand in hand to further develop Vienna as a bicycle-friendly city.

The bike-sharing service is available across all 23 districts and is additionally deployed temporarily at events. Child seats are also available in the fleet. The combination of classic bikes and e-bikes as well as the dense station infrastructure make the offering attractive for various user groups.

The doubling of the e-bike fleet is a further step toward sustainable urban mobility. With the new e-bikes, 3,700 bikes can be rented at more than 250 locations throughout Vienna. The WienMobil e-bikes remain permanently on Vienna's streets and have transitioned from the pilot project to regular operation.
