Uneven development in the services sector
In its flash estimate published on Monday, the institute reports a stagnating gross domestic product for Austria in the second quarter of 2026. Compared with the previous quarter, there was no real growth, meaning the economy remained at the level of the first quarter.
Within the services branches, development was uneven, according to WIFO. Verbatim, it states: "Den höchsten Zuwachs verzeichneten die Finanz- und Versicherungsdienstleistungen, während die sonstigen wirtschaftlichen Dienstleistungen und die öffentliche Verwaltung i. w. S. Einbußen hinnehmen mussten." While individual sectors were thus able to grow, others noticeably dampened the overall balance.
WIFO expert Christian Glocker pointed in the flash estimate to the burdens caused by the so-called oil price shock. Higher crude oil prices had reduced the purchasing power of private households and increased costs for businesses, the institute explained. This development weakened the demand-based impulses from within the country.
