The Austrian Institute of Economic Research (Wifo) puts economic growth in the second quarter of 2026 at zero percent compared to the previous quarter and attributes the stagnation to the consequences of the Iran war.

The Austrian Institute of Economic Research (Wifo) has reported a standstill of the domestic economy in its flash estimate for the second quarter of 2026. Gross domestic product (GDP) did not grow compared to the first quarter, the institute announced. This means the previously expected recovery did not continue.

As the central burdening factor, Wifo cited the significantly increased oil price, which is attributable to the Iran war. "Der durch den Iran-Krieg deutlich angestiegene Erdölpreis habe die österreichische Wirtschaft im zweiten Quartal belastet und dadurch die konjunkturelle Erholung unterbrochen", the flash estimate states. Higher energy costs make both private consumption and industrial production more expensive.
