WIFO economist Marcus Scheiblecker has warned in an APA interview of economic risks from longer heat waves in Austria, describing sectors such as construction, agriculture, and tourism as particularly vulnerable.

Marcus Scheiblecker, an economist at the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO), pointed to the economic consequences of climate change for Austria in an interview with the Austria Presse Agentur (APA). Longer heat periods posed significant adjustment challenges for the economy, he said. "Das ist keine gute Nachricht," Scheiblecker summarized his assessment. In general and in the manufacturing sector, working conditions also depended on the respective temperature.

Agriculture would be particularly affected. "Ein großes Problem" would arise "wenn immer stärkere Hitzewellen von Juni bis September auftreten und nicht wie früher nur zur Sommermitte Ende Juli/Anfang August," Scheiblecker explained. If this trend intensified, the sector would have to prepare for a significantly longer stress phase, which would burden yields and production conditions alike.
