TUSCANY, Italy — May 1, 2026 Tuscany wildfire evacuates 3500 army deployed

A rapidly spreading wildfire in Tuscany has forced the evacuation of over 3,500 people, with the Italian army joining firefighters to battle flames that have already consumed 8 square kilometers of woodland.

Fire Spreads Near Pisa and Lucca

The wildfire broke out in the area between Pisa and Lucca, specifically affecting Monte Faeta and the community of San Giuliano Terme. Authorities believe the fire started when a farmer burning olive branches lost control due to strong winds. The flames quickly spread, prompting immediate evacuation orders for the most affected areas.

Residents were relocated to nearby gymnasiums as emergency services worked to contain the blaze. The regional government described the situation as critical, with resources stretched thin.

Emergency Response Intensifies

The Italian army has been deployed alongside firefighters and emergency teams to combat the wildfire. Firefighting planes and helicopters are being used to douse the flames from above, while ground crews attempt to establish firebreaks.

Eugenio Giani, the President of Tuscany, emphasized the severity of the crisis, stating: "sehr schwierigen Situation, auf die wir unsere ganze Kraft konzentrieren müssen" ("a very difficult situation, requiring all our focus and effort").

Local authorities continue to monitor wind conditions, which remain a significant challenge in controlling the fire’s spread. The evacuation zone may expand if the situation worsens.
