GRAZ, Austria — May 3, 2026 Graz wildfire enters ninth day with 2300 firefighters

Firefighters in Austria’s Styria region continued battling a stubborn wildfire northwest of Graz for a ninth consecutive day on Sunday, with 2,300 personnel deployed since the blaze began. The fire, which has scorched 70 hectares near Stift Rein in Graz-Umgebung district, remains active as crews work to extinguish lingering hotspots.

Firefighting Efforts and Challenges

Herbert Buchgraber of the Graz-Umgebung District Firefighters Association told the Austrian Press Agency (APA) that efforts are focused on locating and dousing smoldering embers. "Rund 2.300 Einsatzkräfte waren seit Beginn bis Samstagabend schon vor Ort" ("Around 2,300 personnel have been on-site since the beginning until Saturday evening"), he said.
