Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen knocked fourth-seeded American Ben Shelton out of the tournament in five sets on the second day of the Wimbledon Championships, while Germany's top player Alexander Zverev reached the second round.

Already on Tuesday evening, Otto Virtanen caused the first sensation of this year's tournament at the All England Club. The Finn, ranked only 140th in the ATP world rankings and having fought his way into the main draw through qualifying, defeated the favored Ben Shelton 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, and 7-6 (11-9).

A Finn makes history

According to the organizers, the match lasted 4 hours and 21 minutes and developed into a real thriller, especially in the deciding set. At 8-9 in the fifth-set tiebreak, Virtanen even saved a match point before sealing the victory shortly thereafter.
