Dallas, 06 July 2026
In the World Cup Round of 16, the two Iberian football heavyweights Spain and Portugal meet on Monday (9 PM, Servus TV) in Arlington near Dallas, with the duel also being staged as a generational comparison between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal.
The Veteran and the Young Star
When Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his first World Cup goal in Germany in 2006, Lamine Yamal had not yet been born. Nearly two decades later, the two face each other in Arlington, staging a round-of-16 clash of generations: Ronaldo, at 41 still the undisputed leader of the Portuguese, and Yamal, at 18 the young darling of the masses.
Ronaldo, born on 5 February 1985 in Funchal, made his professional debut for Sporting Lisbon in 2002 and moved to Manchester United at the age of 18. Over the course of his long career, the superstar has scored 970 goals. For the national team, he has played 232 matches, scoring 146 goals. Since 2023, he has played for the Saudi club al-Nassr FC. According to Forbes magazine, Ronaldo is the top earner in football with an annual salary of 262 million euros. On Instagram, he has by far the largest fan base in sport (671 million).
