Dernau, 12 June 2026

Around 600 people had to leave their homes in Dernau in the Ahr Valley on Friday morning so that a 250-kilogram World War II aerial bomb could be defused.

Location of the find and exclusion zone

According to the collective municipality, the unexploded ordnance had already been discovered on Thursday during probing works for the restoration of the Ahr River. On Friday morning, the defusing of the 250-kilogram explosive device began, requiring an area with a radius of about 300 meters around the find site to be cleared. The Ahrweiler district administration announced that the unexploded device lies on the right bank at the level of Ahrweg.

According to the State Statistical Office, Dernau has about 1,500 inhabitants. The evacuation therefore affected more than a third of the village's population. Affected were the residents of several streets within a 300-meter radius around the find site on the right side of the Ahr. They had to have left their homes by 9:00 a.m.
