Xaver Schlager Set to Move to Nottingham Forest and Link Up with Oliver Glasner

Leipzig spell ends without extension

Since his move in the summer of 2022, Schlager made a total of 108 competitive appearances for RB Leipzig. Despite the Bundesliga club's efforts, no contract extension was reached, meaning the 28-year-old midfielder can move on a free transfer.

A 55-time Austrian international, Schlager grew up in St. Valentin and is part of the core of the ÖFB team. He represented Austria at a FIFA World Cup.

An old acquaintance from Wolfsburg days

Schlager and Glasner know each other from their time together at VfL Wolfsburg. Schlager played there from 2019 to 2021 under then-manager Glasner, before both continued their careers in the Bundesliga and beyond.

A move to Nottingham would be Schlager's first transfer to England in his professional career. In the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg and Leipzig had previously been his only stops.

Premier League as a new chapter

Glasner has recently taken charge as head coach of Nottingham Forest. The Premier League club's pursuit of the Austrian midfielder appears to lean on continuity and a familiar connection from the Wolfsburg collaboration.

The report on the planned move was published on a Wednesday and originates from the dpa news channel. According to it, negotiations have progressed so far that only the signature is said to be missing.

Should the transfer go through as reported, Schlager would receive a two-year contract at Nottingham with an option for an additional year. The move would come at no transfer fee for the club.
