Microsoft's Xbox gaming division has announced the elimination of around 3,200 jobs, with 1,600 employees already losing their positions on Monday; at the same time, several studios are to be sold or made independent again.
According to consistent reports across multiple media outlets, about 20 percent of Xbox's total workforce is affected by the layoffs. The measure is spread across numerous studios, with most programmer positions reportedly slated to be cut at id Software. id Software has belonged to Microsoft since the acquisition of ZeniMax Media and is responsible for franchises including Doom and Quake.
The new Xbox chief Asha Sharma addressed employees in an internal memo and spoke openly about the state of the business. "Our business isn't doing well," she wrote, according to the report. She also explained that Xbox loses 64 percent of every dollar invested annually. A symbolic "Reset" is necessary to realign the company.
