Beijing, 05 June 2026

Xi Jinping will travel to North Korea on Monday for a two-day summit with Kim Jong-un, his first visit to Pyongyang in nearly seven years and a signal that China is moving to reassert its influence over its long-standing ally.

A return visit after years of frozen ties

The trip, confirmed by Chinese and North Korean officials, will be Xi's second visit to North Korea overall; his first came in 2019. It comes at a moment when Beijing is growing uneasy about the deepening military partnership between Pyongyang and Moscow, even as it seeks to repair ties that frayed during years of pandemic-driven border closures.
