The world-renowned Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem will open its first educational center outside of Israel in Munich, the organization announced on Wednesday.
A Symbolic Location
The decision to establish the facility in the Bavarian capital was confirmed by Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan in Jerusalem. The center is planned to open within three years at Karolinenplatz in the heart of the southern German metropolis.
Dayan stated that the choice of Munich carries "a deep symbolic meaning" due to the city's significance in the rise of National Socialism. The Nazi party was founded there in 1920 and maintained its headquarters in the city, which supporters called the "capital of the movement."
"The decision to locate the center was made at a critical time, when the instrumentalization or denial of the Holocaust and antisemitism are on the rise," Dayan added. The center is intended to serve as a nationwide platform for audiences across Germany and neighboring countries.
