Munich, 28 May 2026
Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial, announced on Thursday that it will establish its first international educational center in Munich, Germany.
The decision, made jointly with the state governments of Bavaria and Saxony, follows a comprehensive nationwide feasibility study supported by the German government. The main center will be built at Karolinenplatz in central Munich, with a smaller satellite location planned in Leipzig.
Symbolic Choice of Location
Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan stated that choosing Munich carries "eine tiefe symbolische Bedeutung" (deep symbolic significance) due to the city's role in the rise of National Socialism. The NSDAP was founded in Munich in 1920, and Adolf Hitler began his political ascent there.
