Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial, will open a new educational center in Munich's Maxvorstadt district at a site deeply intertwined with the rise of National Socialism.
The center will be located at Karolinenplatz 4, a building that formerly served as the Nazi Party court. In the immediate vicinity on Brienner Strasse stood the "Brown House," the national headquarters of the NSDAP.
According to the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism, nearly 6,000 party employees worked in more than 60 buildings in the neighborhood. The NSDAP was founded there in 1920 and re-founded in 1925, and Adolf Hitler launched his failed Beer Hall Putsch from the area in 1923.
