Yad Vashem to Open Holocaust Education Center at Former Nazi Party Site in Munich

The Maxvorstadt district, where the center will stand, was once the administrative heart of the Nazi movement. According to the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism, nearly 6,000 party employees worked in more than 60 buildings in the area.

The NSDAP was founded there in 1920 and re-founded in 1925. In 1923, Adolf Hitler launched his failed Beer Hall Putsch from the same neighborhood.

Funding and Political Support

Munich later became the scene of another antisemitic attack: during the 1972 Olympic Games, Palestinian terrorists targeted members of the Israeli Olympic team, killing eleven team members and a German police officer.

The German federal government has allocated significant funding for the project. The culture budget for 2026 and 2027 already earmarks more than 200 million euros. Of that sum, 93 million euros are designated for operating costs over the next 15 years.

An additional 23 million euros will cover the relocation of current tenants, while 50 million euros are set aside for building maintenance and 16.7 million euros for security upgrades.

Charlotte Knobloch, president of the Jewish Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria, called the initiative a "necessary counterweight" to political extremism. "Antisemitism cannot be overcome without knowledge of history," Knobloch said.

A Shift Toward Victims' Voices

Gady Gronich, general secretary of the Conference of European Rabbis, emphasized the role of education in combating rising antisemitism. "Especially in times of growing antisemitic threats, education is the decisive key. Whoever understands history protects the future," Gronich said.

Yael Richler-Friedman, pedagogical director of Yad Vashem's International Institute for Holocaust Education, outlined the center's approach late last year. "We want to bring a broader picture than before into the dialogue of remembrance culture in Germany. This will primarily include the voices of the victims and less those of the perpetrators," she said.

The new institution is expected to serve as a hub for teacher training, curriculum development, and public programs, drawing on Yad Vashem's decades of expertise in Holocaust education and commemoration.

Officials have not yet announced a specific opening date, but the substantial financial commitments signal that planning is well advanced. The center will operate as a satellite of the Jerusalem-based memorial, which has long collaborated with international partners on educational initiatives.
