Yad Vashem to Open Holocaust Education Centers in Munich and Leipzig

Dayan emphasized the urgency of the mission. "Working together with our German partners, this center will help ensure that the truth of the Holocaust is preserved and passed on to future generations," he said.

The Leipzig branch is the first Yad Vashem satellite location outside Israel. It will establish interactive learning spaces and target educators and young people in the region and neighboring countries.

Leipzig Branch and Regional Impact

Saxony's Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) described the project as a great honor and an obligation for the state. "Teil des neuen Holocaust-Bildungszentrums in Deutschland zu sein, ist für Sachsen eine große Ehre und zugleich Verpflichtung," Kretschmer said, adding that Leipzig could serve as a "Brücke nach Osteuropa."

German Education Minister Karin Prien stressed the importance of historical knowledge. "Das Wissen über das, was war, ist wichtig, um das Übel in der Zukunft zu verhindern," Prien said, noting that especially young people in Germany know too little about the Shoah and the systematic murder of millions of Jews under National Socialism.

Yad Vashem stated that the new branch aims to strengthen the Jewish perspective in German remembrance culture. The institution noted that distorted representations of Holocaust history are increasing worldwide and antisemitism is spreading further.

A New Perspective on Remembrance

Yael Richler-Friedman, Pedagogical Director of the International Institute for Holocaust Education at Yad Vashem, said the center will bring a larger picture into the German remembrance culture dialogue. "Wir möchten mit dem Bildungszentrum ein größeres Bild als bisher in den Dialog der Erinnerungskultur in Deutschland einbringen. Das wird vor allem Stimmen der Opfer beinhalten und weniger der Täter," she stated.

The Ariowitsch-Haus in Leipzig has a complex history. Donated by the Ariowitsch entrepreneurial family, it served as a Jewish retirement home from 1931. In 1942, more than 100 residents and staff were deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. During the Nazi era, the building was used as a Nazi office.

History of the Ariowitsch-Haus

After World War II, the building was used by both American and Soviet occupying forces before the Jewish community regained ownership in 1946. It operated again as a retirement home until 1997. Renovation work to convert it into a cultural center began in 2006, and it currently serves as a center for Jewish culture and education.

According to the Saxon Ministry of Culture, next steps include clarifying financial and personnel questions, construction measures, and content coordination with the Munich site. The center could begin operations in two to three years.

The announcement follows studies pointing to a rise in antisemitic attitudes in Germany and declining Holocaust awareness among young Germans. Dayan noted that historically grounded Holocaust education is more important than ever as society moves further away from the era of eyewitness testimony.
