Wels, 27 July 2026

On Monday morning, three crew members from the Wels Voluntary Fire Department rescued a young swan from a weir on the Mühlbach stream in the Lichtenegg district and returned it to its family.

On Monday morning, the Wels Voluntary Fire Department was called to the Lichtenegg district. An attentive passerby had alerted the emergency services because she had noticed that the waterbird was circling the area of a weir all on its own and visibly nervous. As she explained to the response team, a young swan was in the current near a weir, visibly nervous, circling the area and no longer able to leave it on its own.

The emergency call

When the fire department arrived, the young, already somewhat exhausted animal was trapped by the current on a concrete ledge. The animal was apparently unable to free itself from the current of the tailwater. It was carefully caught with a landing net and placed in a transport cage.
