Zelensky warns of 50,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia

The Ukrainian leadership sees this as evidence that Russia can no longer meet its own personnel needs on its own. Zelensky had previously repeatedly pointed to heavy losses in the Russian army and spoken of Moscow's growing dependence on external support.

Reactions and demands on the West

The warning from Kyiv is explicitly directed at Ukraine's Western allies as well. Zelensky called for a clear response from the European Union and the United States, in particular additional sanctions against North Korea and a strengthening of Ukraine's air defense.

The background is a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Russia and North Korea signed last year. Observers see the current reports as an indication that this agreement has now gone beyond mere arms deliveries and also includes military personnel assistance.

Previous findings and open questions

It remains unclear to what extent North Korean soldiers are directly involved in combat operations against the Ukrainian army. Zelensky spoke only of a "preparation" and compared the situation to the use of foreign fighters on Russia's side earlier in the war.

The Ukrainian General Staff said the situation was being closely monitored. It is working closely with international partners to track the movements of North Korean units on Russian territory and to assess possible consequences for the course of the war.

International media had previously reported isolated sightings of North Korean soldiers in Russian border regions. However, the figure of around 50,000 persons now cited by Zelensky far exceeds previous estimates and is causing growing diplomatic alarm in Kyiv.

International dimension of the conflict

The Ukrainian government announced that it would continue to address the issue at the international level in the coming days. Among other things, Zelensky plans talks with other European heads of state and government in order to increase the pressure on Moscow and Pyongyang.

At the same time, Ukraine says it is intensifying reconnaissance along the border regions. Intelligence circles speak of increased attention to troop movements that could indicate a possible deployment of North Korean units.

The development is seen as further evidence of the internationalization of the conflict. Should the large-scale deployment of North Korean soldiers be confirmed, this would represent a new quality of Russian warfare and would have significant implications for the debate on further Western support for Ukraine.
