Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned of around 50,000 North Korean soldiers who, according to his account, are already stationed on Russian soil or are being prepared for deployment in the war in Ukraine.

Background to the warning

Zelensky spoke of a "serious escalation" according to his presidential office, citing information from Ukrainian intelligence services and independent observers. According to this, North Korea has not only supplied Russia with weapons but increasingly also with personnel. There is talk of tens of thousands of soldiers who are operating alongside Russian units or are to be prepared for such deployment.

According to Ukrainian and independent assessments, North Korea has already supplied its ally Russia with millions of artillery and mortar shells as well as ballistic missiles and rocket launchers.
