The Hamburg native Alexander Zverev reached the round of 16 at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon on Saturday with a 6:2, 7:6 (7:4), 6:4 victory over the American Marcos Giron and thus matched his best result at the All England Club.
Tennis professional Alexander Zverev has reached the round of the last 16 at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. The French Open winner and world number three defeated the American Marcos Giron in the third round 6:2, 7:6 (7:4), 6:4 and is thus in the round of 16 of the grass classic in London without dropping a set. After a good two and a half hours, the victory was sealed despite brief lapses in form.
First set: Early break and comfortable lead
Zverev had already broken his opponent's second service game in the first set and taken a 2:1 lead. He could even afford seven missed break points and still took the set 6:2. But Giron fought back and broke back to make it 3:4 before Zverev seized control of the match again.
In the second set, the Hamburg native kept his nerve in the crucial moments. At 2:1 and 3:2, the American had a break point each time, but Zverev did not put a foot wrong when it mattered. Winning the tiebreak in the second set provided the decisive turning point. He had already won three tiebreaks in his two previous matches, and now added a fourth.
