Alexander Zverev needed nearly five hours to get past his opening-round opponent in a five-set marathon at the New York tournament, setting up a second-round meeting with Quentin Halys.

Zverev's return to competitive tennis after his title run in Paris began in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night. The match stretched well past midnight, with the German eventually closing it out in five sets after a contest that both players treated as a baseline war of attrition.

After converting his final match point, Zverev embraced the loser at the net in a show of sportsmanship that underlined how grueling the encounter had been.
