The world number four, Karen Khachanov, has been eliminated in the first round of the US Open in New York by Australia's Alex de Minaur, ending his Grand Slam tournament campaign far short of his own expectations.

Khachanov was defeated on Thursday (local time) in Flushing Meadows 7:6 (5:7), 3:6, 2:6, 2:6. The Russian, seeded fourth at the tournament, was only able to live up to his favored status in the first set. In the following three sets, he increasingly came under pressure and lost the match clearly.

In the closing stages of the match, Khachanov appeared physically impaired. No official details on the nature and extent of his condition were initially provided. Observers at the court, however, reported a noticeable restriction in his mobility, which became particularly evident toward the end of the third set and throughout the fourth.
