16-year-old dies in moped accident in Styria

Investigations into the cause of the accident

According to initial findings, the moped rider was travelling alone on the small motorcycle. Whether he had fallen beforehand, whether technical defects on the vehicle played a role, or whether health problems could have triggered the accident, is the subject of the ongoing investigations. Indications of alcohol or other intoxicating substances are being examined.

The emergency services were alerted during the night after the car driver had discovered the motionless teenager on the road. Despite immediately initiated resuscitation measures, all help came too late for the 16-year-old. The relatives were informed and are being cared for by a crisis intervention team.

Psychological support was organised for the relatives of the victim, but also for first responders such as the attentive car driver, according to police. Helpers who witness a fatal accident are often burdened themselves and need professional support.

Accident location and background

According to police, the exact accident location is on a municipal road in the Steinberg locality, which belongs to the western Styrian town municipality in the district of Voitsberg. According to investigators, the stretch is manageable and not known as an accident hotspot. Nevertheless, special caution is advised on municipal roads at night.

The fatal accident is part of a series of similar incidents involving young riders of small motorcycles in Austria. Just last week, the KFV (Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit) had pointed out the increased risk faced by young moped riders. According to KFV, moped riders under 18 are disproportionately often involved in serious accidents.

Reactions and witness appeal

The Voitsberg police station has recorded the accident and is conducting the investigations in coordination with the Graz public prosecutor's office. An expert was consulted to technically examine the small motorcycle. A result is expected in the coming days.

The authorities are asking possible witnesses who were travelling in the Steinberg area between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. on the night leading into Wednesday and who have observations regarding the course of the accident to contact the Voitsberg police station. Information about the riding behaviour of the victim prior to the accident could also be relevant to the investigations.

The municipality in the district of Voitsberg is in shock. The mayor and pastor have expressed condolences to the family of the victim. On social media, residents and friends of the teenager are offering their condolences. A memorial service has not yet been announced.

With the death of the 16-year-old, a series of tragic traffic accidents in the district of Voitsberg comes to an end this summer. Back in June, a 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed on the B70. Police announced increased speed checks on the secondary roads in the region.
