Construction site risk for motorcyclists

According to initial investigations, a 23-year-old from the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district is believed to have entered the second lane — which was cordoned off with traffic delineators — within the construction site area for reasons that have not yet been clarified. The recovery of the motorcycle and the accident investigation by the responsible emergency services were carried out at the scene.

All help came too late for the 23-year-old. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His next of kin were notified by the police. At the time of reporting, investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.

Motorcyclists are considered particularly vulnerable road users on expressways such as the S6, as they have significantly less protection than car occupants in the event of a fall or collision. Construction site areas in particular pose additional risks, because lane narrowings and changing road markings can cause the riding line to shift suddenly.

Investigations and witness appeal

The cordon of traffic delineators normally serves to guide traffic safely past the actual construction site. How the motorcyclist was nevertheless able to enter the cordoned-off area of the second lane is part of the ongoing investigations.

While the accident was being documented and recovery work was being carried out, the S6 had to be closed to traffic or at least reduced to single-lane operation in the affected section. According to police, this led to significant traffic jams and disruptions, also affecting holiday travel toward Klagenfurt.

The responsible Styrian State Police Directorate has taken over the further investigations. In addition to clarifying the cause of the accident, it is also being examined whether the securing of the construction site complied with applicable regulations and whether third-party fault — for example, by other road users — was involved.
