16-year-old uses prison leave to escape and is stopped after 19 offences

Investigators are following leads suggesting that the teenager was active in the districts of Freistadt, Urfahr-Umgebung, and Amstetten, among others. Traces were also found along the S10, a expressway in Upper Austria, which could be linked to the offences.

Traces in several districts

In addition to the offences, the 16-year-old is now also being investigated for escape from custody. As a spokesperson explained, the correctional facility will additionally review the incident internally. Whether disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against staff was initially unclear.

According to initial reports, the boy was alone when he was apprehended. There are currently no indications of accomplices or a more organised network behind the offences, according to police. The public prosecutor's office will decide after the investigations are completed how many of the 19 offences will ultimately be attributed to the teenager.

Consequences and open questions

The age of the accused makes the case particularly sensitive. In Austria, the age of criminal responsibility is 14, meaning juveniles can already be sentenced to prison. Which of the 19 offences the 16-year-old from the district of Kirchdorf will specifically be charged with, and which may be attributable to other individuals, is part of the ongoing investigation.

What security precautions are in place regarding supervised leave and how the teenager was able to evade the check is the subject of an internal review. It is also being examined whether the original prison sentence at the Innsbruck correctional facility must be reassessed, as the teenager is alleged to have committed further offences while in custody.

Police have secured evidence and are asking any additional victims to come forward. In the coming days, interrogations and confrontations are to take place.

The exact crime scenes in districts such as Freistadt, Urfahr-Umgebung, Amstetten, and along the S10 have so far only been roughly outlined. Only the analysis of the traces and further witness statements are expected to clarify how many of the 19 offences occurred in Upper Austria and how many in Lower Austria.

The 16-year-old was not injured during his arrest, police said. He was taken into custody and, after the immediate measures were completed, transferred to a correctional facility. What will happen with the original sentence in Innsbruck remains open.

What is certain, however, is that the teenager must now expect further reports and additional criminal prosecution. Since supervised leave is subject to requirements such as behavioural assessment and security checks, the correctional facility is likely to review the case as a lesson for future leave decisions.
