Escaped Salzburg Prisoner Allegedly Committed 19 Crimes in a Few Weeks

According to police, the suspect confessed to the offenses. "Während seiner Abgängigkeit soll er nach derzeitigem Ermittlungsstand insgesamt 19 Straftaten begangen zu haben, zu denen er sich geständig zeigte", the investigators stated in a communication. The case thus involves an unusually high number of offenses within just a few weeks.

Nature of the Offenses

The 37-year-old is charged with several fraud offenses, thefts, and one attempted burglary between April 10 and June 7, 2026. Specifically, these involve accommodation fraud at various lodging establishments as well as internet fraud conducted via a sales platform.

In addition to the fraud cases, the public prosecutor's office accuses him of stealing tip jars from the accommodations where he stayed during his escape. The offenses were spread across several Salzburg lodging establishments, where he lodged briefly in each case without paying the costs.

Damage Assessment and Investigations

The known total damage amounts to around 5,000 euros. This is comprised of unpaid overnight stays, unremitted sales proceeds on an online platform, and the contents of the stolen tip jars. Additional victims are still being identified, which means the damage could rise further.

The investigations are being conducted by the Criminal Division of the Salzburg State Criminal Police Office. It is also being examined whether further offenses committed during his stay outside the prison can be attributed to the accused. Due to his escape from the day release and the new offenses, he must answer for them in an additional proceeding.

The case raises questions about the control of day releases from Salzburg prisons. Salzburg Prison itself has not yet commented on the circumstances of the approved outing. The authorities emphasized that the swift arrest of the man on June 11 had prevented further crimes.
