The 2026 FIFA World Cup will open on Thursday evening at 9:00 PM CEST with the opening match between co-hosts Mexico and South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
Starting at 7:30 PM CEST, the official opening ceremony will begin at the Azteca Stadium. As world football governing body FIFA announced, the party is set to put "Mexican culture with music, dance and art" in the spotlight. Superstar Shakira will perform the official World Cup song "Dai Dai" together with Nigerian musician Burna Boy. The opening match itself will be broadcast live by ZDF.
A Tournament of Superlatives
The tournament is an XXL event in every respect: "It runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026. That's a hefty five and a half weeks or 39 days." A total of 48 nations are taking part, with 104 matches being played. Games will be held at 16 venues in three countries. Eleven of these are in the USA (New Jersey, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco), three in Mexico (Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara) and two in Canada (Vancouver, Toronto). The final will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, also with kickoff at 9:00 PM CEST.
